Born in 1982 in Toulouse, he received violin and bassoon lessons at the local Conservatoire of Music.The french-chilean bassoonist studied with Prof.Dag Jensen at the Hannover Musikhochschule, and was a member of the Berlin Karajan Academy. He was awarded the Mendelssohn-Bartholdy Prize in Berlin and the 1.prize at Wattrelos Competition for young soloists.
Claudio Abbado invited him to join the Lucerne Festival Orchestra and the Orchestra Mozart since its foundation.He was appointed 2007 principal bassoon by the Saarbrücken Radio Orchestra, now called Deutsche Radio Philharmonie.As guest principal bassoon he played regularly with major orchestras such as Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, Royal Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Chamber Orchestra of Europe under the baton of Sir Simon Rattle, Daniel Barenboim, Christian Thielemann, Pierre Boulez, Zubin Mehta…
As a soloist Guilhaume Santana appeared with the Munich symphony Orchestra, Sinfonia Varsovia, Budapest Radio Orchestra, Kurpfälzisches Kammerorchester Mannheim, Deutsche Radio Philharmonie, and with the Orchestra Mozart and Claudio Abbado.Recordings of Mozart´s bassoon concerto and Sinfonia Concertante are available for the label Deutsche Grammophon.His chamber music activities lead him to the Kammermusiksaal of the Berlin Philharmonie, the Zankel hall at Carnegie Hall, the Concertgebouw Amsterdam with partners such as Emmanuel Ax,Till Fellner, Alexander Lonquich, Giuliano Carmignola, Albrecht Mayer, the Berliner Barocksolisten and Sabine Meyer and her wind ensemble.
Guilhaume Santana teaches currently at the University for Music in Saarbrücken, Germany, and earlier at the HEAR Academy in Strasbourg and at the Musikhochschule Freiburg im Breisgau. He holds regularly master classes in Europe, Asia and South America.
He teaches in english, french, german, spanish and italian.
